Story
House of NALA is a retail platform for African designers and artisans in Africa.
Established in 2021 by Africa Fashion International, House of NALA has presented pop-ups in Abu Dhabi, Kasane, Abidjan, and Cape Town.
The brand focuses on a collection of well-curated clothing and accessories, offering customers direct access to designers working across the continent.
The name NALA, meaning abundance in several African languages, speaks to the depth of talent and creativity across the continent. House of NALA brings that work together in one place, making it accessible to customers who value design, material, and finish.
At its core, House of NALA is a commercial platform for designers whose work is often seen in shows and editorial but less often available in a permanent retail environment. The store works alongside Africa Fashion International’s broader platform, linking designers to both visibility and retail access.
For customers, it offers direct access to this work in a setting that allows for proper consideration and fit.
Foundation and Early Development
House of NALA was established in 2021 by Africa Fashion International. The first store opened at The Leonardo in Sandton.The aim was straightforward. Designers who show within the AFI platform needed a place where customers could buy their work. The store brought together a small group of designers and introduced a retail model based on selection rather than volume.
To achieve this, we are dedicated to constantly innovating, evolving & adopting new sustainable practices in every aspect of our business. By remaining dynamic & constantly evolving, we endeavour to reduce our impact & foster a healthier, more sustainable future.
Pop Up & Expansion
In 2022, House of NALA opened a second location in Sandton City, which now serves as the flagship store. This move placed the brand within a high-traffic retail environment and allowed it to operate on a daily retail cycle. It also made the store easier to access for both local and visiting customers.
House of NALA has also operated through a series of pop-ups across Africa and internationally. Each location was selected for its audience and context.
Abu Dhabi
Presented through the Forbes 30/50 event in 2022, this activation introduced the brand to an international business audience.
Kasane, Botswana
Also linked to the 2022 Forbes 30/30 gathering, this pop-up engaged a smaller, high-value audience in a more private setting.
Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire
This location extended the brand’s reach into West Africa, where there is an established interest in fashion and design. This pop-up was during the AFCON 2023.
One&Only Cape Town
Set within a luxury hotel, this pop-up connected with international visitors and local customers in a hospitality environment. This was operational from December 2024 until May 2025.
The Westin Cape Town
This activation took place during the IWF Cornerstone 2025 Conference, where the audience included professionals and business traveler’s.
Platinum Walk, Oceans Mall, Durban
House of NALA opened its first store in Durban in April 2026.
