The Durban July is South Africa’s most iconic intersection of sport, fashion, and culture. Beyond the horse racing, it’s a runway without walls. It is where fashion creatives, celebrities, and trendsetters showcase daring, luxurious, and unforgettable looks. It's not just an event; it's a cultural spectacle and a moment of self-expression.

This year’s theme, Marvels of Mzansi, presents attendees with a fashion challenge that allows them to celebrate what makes South Africa a great country.

We spoke to Loice Dube, designer at NALA Privé, for tips on how to interpret the theme, the colours to wear and more!

When you hear "Marvels of Mzansi," what’s the first thing that comes to mind?

"Marvels of Mzansi" instantly calls to mind the richness, diversity, and beauty of South African culture. From our beadwork and traditional regalia to township street style and world-class craftsmanship, it’s a celebration of everything that makes Mzansi magical.

How can you interpret the theme in a way that works for both design and styling?

To bring the theme to life, it’s about merging local cultural cues with luxury fashion sensibilities. Think modern silhouettes with elements of traditional artistry—like elevated beadwork, inspired prints, or contemporary takes on heritage fabrics. Styling should feel intentional: jewellery, headwear, or textures that honour our roots while feeling globally relevant.

What colours, fabrics, and silhouettes best capture the theme?

Bold jewel tones, such as emerald, citrine, ruby, and sapphire, evoke the grandeur of "Marvels." Luxe textures such as mohair, beaded tulle, raw silk, and velvet pair well with the theme’s opulence. Silhouettes can range from structured and sculptural to fluid and layered, allowing each look to feel like a walking tribute to South African artistry.

What fashion rules should you follow for a daytime event like this?

Prioritise breathable fabrics, clever layering, and silhouettes that move well throughout the day. Consider that the event transitions from daylight to evening, so elegance with practicality is key. Avoid overly heavy materials, ensure comfortable footwear, and let statement pieces do the talking.

Any tips for standing out at the Durban July while still looking chic and effortless?

Focus on storytelling. Whether it’s through a custom print, a meaningful accessory, or a nod to your heritage, authenticity always stands out. And remember, effortlessness isn’t about simplicity; it’s about polish. Tailored fits, well-curated styling, and confidence make the look.
